The cuisine of the Slovenes in Italy unfortunately remains relatively unknown, not only within our country and around the world but even in Friuli Venezia Giulia. We can safely say that it is not a very rich culinary tradition, but this makes it all the more interesting due to the creativity employed to overcome the lack of primary ingredients, as our valleys are predominantly mountainous areas. Moreover, we should never forget that when we speak of culinary tradition, we are referring to a culture that has been passed down for centuries by our people, even those scattered across the world.
Creativity, especially in its feminine expression, is our strength. The resourcefulness of the women from the valleys lies in preparing delicious dishes with minimal resources, and desserts, in particular, are our pride and joy.

We are pleased to present “Dolce la mia valle” (Sweet is my valley), the recipe book released in September 2021, published by the Union of Slovene Emigrants of Friuli Venezia Giulia/Slovenci po Svetu. It contains a collection of recipes, some retrieved and others revisited by our Valeria, a true culinary journey through the traditions of the Natisone Valleys. This book gathers the dessert recipes typical of a land rich in history and culture, passed down from generation to generation. From the traditional gubana to delicious rustic cakes, Valeria’s recipes provide a window into the authentic flavors of the valleys. To further enhance the local cultural heritage, the recipe book has also been translated into Slovene, honoring the bilingual identity of the Natisone Valleys and allowing an even wider audience to appreciate these traditional desserts. Discover the sweetness of the Natisone Valleys and let yourself be inspired by recipes that bring tradition, passion, and history from a magical valley to your table.
